A fast moving weather disturbance deposited 4-5 inches of new snow in the northern Gallatin and Madison Ranges while the mountains around Cooke City picked up an additional 7-8 inches. The Bridger Range and mountains around West Yellowstone picked up 1-3 inches. Winds spiked around 8 pm last night with the arrival of this storm, but have gradually decreased and are currently blowing 10-25 mph out of the WNW. Mountain temperatures are averaging in the mid teens F with Cooke City being the coldest at 5 degrees F. Temperatures will gradually rise into the low 30s by this afternoon and winds will stay consistent out of the W at 10-20 mph. Southwest Montana will likely see a break in the weather this morning, but increasing clouds and a chance of mountain snow will move back into the area tonight. 1-3 inches of snow are possible by tomorrow morning.
Over the past 24 hours 2-3 inches of snow has fallen in the mountains around Cooke City, while the rest of our advisory area has remained dry. Light cloud cover overnight has kept mountain temperatures in the mid to high teens and winds are currently blowing out the W at 20-30 mph with ridgetop gusts reaching 40 mph in Hyalite and Big Sky. Today, temperatures will climb into the high 20s F and winds will stay moderate out of the W at 10-20 mph. Skies will remain mostly cloudy today as a weak short wave passes to our north; however, no snow is expected over the next 24 hours.
A strong frontal passage moved through our area around 1 am this morning producing strong winds and heavy snow. In a matter of hours, 4-5 inches of snow fell in the mountains around Big Sky and West Yellowstone while the Bridger Range and northern Gallatin Range picked up 2-3 inches. The mountains around Cooke City picked up 7-8 inches.
Winds spiked with the arrival of the front, producing gusts over 60 mph in Hyalite and Big Sky. Winds have mellowed a bit, but are still blowing out of the WNW at 20-30 mph with gusts in the 40s. Temperatures are ranging from 11 degrees in Cooke City to the high teens-low 20s throughout the rest of our advisory area. Today, winds will remain strong out of the WNW and temperatures will rise into the 20s F. Snowfall will taper off this morning and skies will become partly cloudy by this afternoon. No significant accumulation is expected over the next 24 hours.
Since yesterday morning the mountains near Cooke City and West Yellowstone received 3-6 inches of snow. The mountains near Big Sky and Hyalite Canyon received an inch and the Bridger Range remained dry. Strong winds continue. This morning they were blowing 20-40 mph from the W except near Cooke City where they were blowing from the N. Temperatures were in high single digits F near Cooke City and West Yellowstone and mid to high teens F everywhere else. Today, winds should decrease slightly and temperatures should warm into the 20s F. Snowfall will come again tonight. The southern areas will again do well with 3-6 inches. Closer to Bozeman and Big Sky, 1-3 inches should fall.
Winds increased yesterday and were blowing westerly 20-25 mph in most areas this morning except at the Bridger Ridge where they were blowing 40 mph. Clear skies overnight allowed temperatures to drop to near 0 degrees F. Cloudy skies will return around noon today, and snowfall should start sometime this afternoon. High temperatures will be in the high teens to 20 degrees F. Winds may subside a bit this morning but increase again this afternoon blowing 20-30 mph from the W and SW with gusts late this afternoon around 40 mph. Snowfall this afternoon and evening will favor the mountains near Bozeman and Big Sky where 3-6 inches should fall by tomorrow morning with other areas receiving 2-4 inches.
Last night’s 6-9 inches around Big Sky and 11 inches at Bridger Bowl fell with barely a whisper of wind. Cooke City picked up an additional five inches with the southern Madison Range getting only 2 inches. Ridgetop winds have been blowing 5-10 mph out of the northwest as temperatures dropped to near 10F. This storm will give us another inch or two before leaving this morning. Clouds will decrease throughout the afternoon and temperatures will rise into the high teens as winds increase out of the west to 15-20 mph.
The mountains picked up more snow yesterday. Cooke City got the most with 6-8 inches while West Yellowstone got the least with 2 inches; 3-4 inches fell everywhere else. Ridgetop winds averaged 25-30 mph with gusts exceeding 40 mph. Temperatures have cooled into the teens from the low 30s yesterday morning. Clouds will increase today as winds remain steady at 20-30 mph out of the west to north. Another moist system will bring snowfall tonight blanketing us with 3-6 inches of new snow by morning.
Over the past 24 hours the mountains around Cooke City have picked up over a foot of snow totaling 1.4 inches of water (Fisher Creek Snotel). The mountains around West Yellowstone have received 6-8 inches over the past 24 hours while the mountains around Bozeman and Big Sky have squeezed out 2-3 inches. Temperatures this morning are in the mid 20s to low 30s F and winds are cranking out of the WSW at 20-30 mph. Winds have been picking up over the past few hours with gusts in Hyalite topping 70 mph; gusts near Big Sky are breaking 50 mph. More snow and wind are forecasted today with an additional 2-3 inches falling in the south and 1-2 inches in the north. Mountain temperatures will remain warm with highs climbing into the upper 30s. An unsettled weather pattern will continue through tonight, with cooler temperatures arriving tomorrow.
Warm, wet weather has parked it over southwest Montana producing valley rain and mountain snow. Since yesterday morning, 5-6 inches of heavy snow has fallen in the mountains around Cooke City totaling a half inch of water (SWE). The mountains around West Yellowstone have picked up 3-4 inches while the mountains around Big Ski and Bozeman have picked up 1-2 inches. Currently, temperatures are in the mid to high 20s F and winds are blowing out of the WSW at 15-30 mph with gust in Hyalite reaching 45 mph (Hyalite Weather Station). Today, more snow is expected with an additional 3-6 inches falling in the mountains around West Yellowstone and Cooke City, while 2-3 inches will accumulate in the mountains around Big Sky and Bozeman. Winds will stay strong out of the WSW and mountain temperatures will climb into the 30s F. An unsettled weather pattern will continue through tomorrow.
Warm and windy weather continues with temperatures ranging from the low 20s F to the high 20s F and winds blowing 10-30 mph from the W. Since yesterday no snow fell except near West Yellowstone which received a trace and Cooke City which received 2 inches. Today’s weather shouldn’t change much with high temperatures in the high 20s to near 30 degrees F and winds blowing 15-35 mph from the W. Only 1-2 inches of snow should fall today and tonight mostly near West Yellowstone and Cooke City, but more significant snowfall should start tomorrow morning with even warmer temps and stronger winds.
